Title |
Anglo-Scandinavian bridle bit |
||
Description |
English: A complete copper alloy cheekpiece from a late Anglo Saxon bridle bit, dating circa 1000 to 1100.
The cheekpiece is broadly triangular in form, having a rectangular loop at the top, and a zoomorphic, long tapering projection to either side below. Only one animal head survives. The outline is shown by the moulded perimeter of the frame, and shows a beast in profile, looking outwards. The beast has a large comma shaped ear or horn, and a slender eye and snout enhanced by engraving. A possible front claw is also shown extending inwards from the base of the frame. The cheekpiece is in a good condition, and has a reddish patina with patches of light green corrosion. This cheekpiece is a variant on Williams's Type 3, defined as such by the presence of a rectangular loop (Williams 2007, 2). |
