Title
Anglo-Saxon strap-end
Description
English: Fragment of an early medieval strap-end of Thomas's Class A1, formed from two flat pieces of copper alloy joined together. The strap-end has been broken and repaired in antiquity at least once and probably twice.

Roughly half the object survives, measuring 16.7mm in width and 29.8mm in length. The strap end is slightly narrower at the attachment end, then widens towards the middle before tapering towards the missing terminal end. The attachment end was originally split, but the back half is missing. There are two large perforations through which rivets would have fixed the strap end to the strap or belt, and one rivet hole has been made larger or punched again, perhaps as a repair to a broken rivet. Just below these holes are two further small copper alloy attachment rivets which appear to be an ancient repair in response to the loss of the backplate.

The front of the strap end is decorated with Trewhiddle style decoration in relief, although this is quite worn and the exact pattern cannot be made out (it may be zoomorphic). The reverse of the object is undecorated. The strap end weighs 4.65g and dates to the 9th century.
