Title |
Anglo-Saxon disc brooch |
||
Description |
English: Very elaborate and well preserved late 10th/11th century cloisonne brooch. The brooch is disc shaped with seven lugs evenly spaced around the perimeter. Each lug contains a circle of enamel. Working clockwise around the brooch the lug enamel colours are blue, red, green, red, ?dark blue, blue, blue. The face of the brooch is decorated with cloissone enamel. In the centre there is a wavey quatrefoil, the arms of which extend to the edge of the brooch. The quatrefoil is dark blue in colour and divided into five smaller squares by perimeters of a yellowish/light brown enamel. The perimeter of both the quatrefoil and the circular face are decorated with a border of red enamel. This leaves four wedge shaped cells, one in each quarter. The opposing cells contain the same coloured enamel, one set being light blue and the other light green. The reverse of the brooch has a broken integral lug for a hinged pin and a broken catchplate.
This brooch has been published in Hammond (2013, 33; fig. 1.1.1-k), but with an erroneous Wiltshire find location. |
