Title
Anglo-Saxon brooch fragment
Description
English: An early Anglo-Saxon small-long brooch made from copper alloy, missing the lower part of the foot. The headplate is basically rectangular, with a shallow U-shaped nick towards the top of each side edges, and similar nicks on the lower edge, one to either side of the bow. The outline of these nicks may be partly obscured by corrosion, as although they are visible on both faces of the headplate (front and reverse) they do not appear to be complete cut-outs affecting the outline of the headplate.

The headplate is decorated with incised lines running top to bottom, perhaps intended to give a resemblance to a cruciform brooch; they could be seen as outlining a full-height central panel and forming vertical decoration on a pair of wings. The reverse of the headplate has an incomplete pin bar lug with iron corrosion from the missing iron bar and pin around it.

The bow has a flat cross-section at the top where it meets the headplate, and this is decorated with three horizontal grooves. These grooves are repeated where it meets the foot. The top of the foot is flattened and rectangular in cross-section, and has six horizontal grooves at the end. The reverse has a catchplate. The whole brooch has a green patina. Length 45mm, width 19mm.
