Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1870, this Italianate-style building is known as the Anderson Building, and has a historical marker with a mis-printed date of “1807” that predates European settlement in the area by decades, with the area being under the sovereignty of the Ho-Chunk Nation during that time. The plaque’s displayed date also does not make sense because it was not until during the War of 1812 that the United States gained formal sovereign control over modern-day Wisconsin. Major settlement in the state did not take place until the late 1820s, and the first building in Columbus, a wood-frame dwelling, was not built until 1845. Thus, the date displayed on a plaque mounted on the building’s facade is incorrect. The building features a buff brick exterior with arched window bays on the second floor, which are partially infilled, with brick hoods and stone sills, heavily modified first floor retail shopfronts, entrance doors with arched transoms, and brick corbeling at the top of the building’s parapet. The building is a contributing structure in the Columbus Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
