English: Ancient tree This ancient tree trunk was lying exposed in the bottom of a moorland ditch, over a metre below the present day surface level. Allowing for peat accumulation of about 10cm per 100 years, I reckoned it to be about 1000 years since it was growing. If you look closely you can see axe marks on it, presumably made by the man who felled it.... |
