the upper part of this body, in a strong aponeurosis; the anterior fibres, the longest and most distinct, spread out over the sides of the corpus cavernosum,to be inserted partly into this body, anterior to the Erector penis; partly termi-nating in a tendinous expansion, which covers the dorsal vessels of the penis. The latter fibres are best seen by dividing the muscle longitudinally, and dissectingit outwards from the surface of the urethra. Action. This muscle may serve to accelerate the flow of the urine or semen MUSCLES OF THE PERINEUM. 747 along the canal of the urethra. The middle fibres are supposed, by Krause, toassist in the erection of the corpus spongiosum, by compressing the erectile tissueof the bulb. The anterior fibres, according to Tyrrel, also contribute to theerection of the penis, as they are inserted into, and continuous with, the fasciapenis, compressing the dorsal vein during the contraction of the muscle. 391.-The Superficial Muscles and Vessels of the Perinosum.
Text Appearing After Image:
The Erector Penis covers the unattached part of the crus penis. It is anelongated muscle, broader in the middle than at either extremity, and situated oneither side of the lateral boundary of the perin^eum. It arises by tendinous andfleshy fibres from the inner surface of the tuberosity of the ischium, behind thecrus penis, from the surface of the crus, and from the adjacent portion of theramus of the pubes. From these points, fleshy flbres succeed, which end in anaponeurosis which is inserted into the sides and under surface of the crus penis. This muscle compresses the crus penis, <and thus serves to maintain this organerect. The Transversus PerincEi is a narrow muscular slip, which passes more or lesstransversely across the back part of the peringeal space. It arises by a smalltendon from the inner side of the ascending ramus of the ischium^ and, passingobliquely forwards and inwards, is inserted into the central tendinous point of theperingeum, joining in this situation with the
