Summary
[edit]DescriptionAnanda Temple, the Fasting Buddha 0152.jpg |
English: This scene depicts the Buddha fasting, before he discovered
the more moderate discipline that led to his enlightenment. His emaciated form is shown by stylized lines on his torso and forehead. His body, however, is full and well-formed, unlike the Indian prototypes of this episode. His right hand is depicted realistically, with fingers of unequal length, a departure from the convention that requires fingers of equal length. His bhumisparsha mudra is iconographically incorrect, because his fasting took place well before he called the Earth to witness. The Buddha is supported by two helpers, in front of a tree incised into the background. |
