Title
An incomplete mount of early Post-Medieval date.
Description
English: An incomplete mount of early Post-Medieval date. This mount is symmetrical in shape, weighs 5.86g and has a length of 39.2mm. The artefact's maximum width is 11.0mm and the object has an overall maximum depth (thickness) of 12.0mm. The central part of the body of the mount had an oval bulbous form, convexly domed on the external upper side and concavely hollow on the reverse. The hollow on the reverse is a gradually curved hollow with a smooth undecorated surface that has a length of c.17.4mm and width of 9.0mm. The upper surface has decorative moulded transverse lines. Two sets of grooves, that are set 1.4mm apart from each other, are positioned c.4.0mm to either side of the mid-point of the body. Viewing the body of the mount in profile, these four shallow grooves create a subtle ridge and furrowed surface with a wider ridge that stands prouder at the centre. The edge of the hollow body has a thickness of 0.8mm at the sides (the metal rim of the hollow) and thickness of the body over the hollow is 6.7mm. To either end of the body the mount tapers, almost to a point, with a minimum width of 2.5mm at one end and 3.1mm at the other. These tapering ends then form short necks or shanks that gradually increase in width, expanding to form small hemispherical lobes of 4.9mm and 4.5mm width. These shanks and lobes are solid with flat reverse surfaces. The shanks have a thickness of 3.1mm and 2.7mm and the lobes have thicknesses of 4.3mm and 3.7mm. From the centre of the terminal lobes, probably integral, rivets project out of the flat reverse surface. These rivets are probably incomplete and partially corroded. They seem to have a circular cross-section of 3.5mm and 2.7mm diameter as they project out from the mount. They taper to rounded (possibly worn) points at a length of c.4.0mm.
