emigration southward takes place ; and as the food consists of beetles,grasshoppers and other insects which are plentiful in autumn, thebird becomes remarkably fat, and is much esteemed for the table.The note is a faint tioeet. The Buff-breasted Sandpiper may easily be recognized by thebeautiful black viarblmgs on the under side of the primaries andsecondaries: these markings being much more pronounced in theadults than in the young. The upper parts are bufifish-brownmottled with black, a slight greenish tinge showing on the tips ofthe primaries and on the central tail-feathers, the other tail-feathersbeing somewhat barred towards the tips; the under parts arerufous-buff, with a few black spots on the throat and sides of thebreast. In the young the feathers of the upper parts are broadlyedged with dull white, the under parts are paler, and the spots aresmaller. Length 8 in., wing 525. Superficially the bird is notunlike a Ruff, though much smaller than even a Reeve. SCOLOPACin.7-- 589

BARTRAMS SANDPIPER.Bartramia longicauda (Bechstein). The first authenticated occurrence of this larger wanderer fromAmerica was near Warwick at the end of October 1851 ; a secondexample (in the collection of Mr. J. H. Gurney) was killed in aploughed field in Cambridgeshire on December 12th 1855 ; one,now in the Taunton Museum, appears to have been obtained morethan forty years ago on the banks of the Parret in Somersetshire ;Dr. Bullmore has a Cornish specimen shot on November 13th1865, and Dr. Leverton of Truro has another taken in October1883 ; Mr. G. Bolam acquired one from the sea-banks of North-umberland on November 21st 1879 ; and a freshly-killed specimen,purchased in Leadenhall Market and said to come from Lincoln-shire, was identified by Mr. Harting on October 27th 1880. Mr.More has examined a bird said to have been sent to a Dublin game-dealer from Ballinasloe, co. Galway, in the autumn of 1855, andbelieves the statement to be correct.
