syllabled as coo-hai. The young are fedon insects and their larvae, but seeds and grain form the principalfood of this species, and in snowy weather it may be seen examin-ing horse-droppings &c. The general colour of the upper parts is greyish-brown withdarker streaks, and often with a sandy tint; while the under parts arebuftish-white, with dark streaks on the gorget, and pale brown mark-ings on the flanks. The characteristics of this species are the long,pointed crest, large bastard pi/nary, orange-taivny hue of the underside of the wing and inner portion of t/ie quill feathers, and theabsence of ii.<hite from the tail—the feathers of which are tawny-brownand black. Owing to the shortness of its tail and wings the dimen-sions—length 675 in., wing 4i in.—are less than those of theSkylark. The female is slightly smaller and darker than the male;the young have the feathers of the upper parts broadly marginedwith white and buff, and fewer spots on the breast. ALAUDID^E. 245

THE SHORT-TOED LARK. Alauda brachvdactvla, Leisler. The Short-toed Lark is a rare wanderer to England at the seasonsof migration, and the authenticated instances of its occurrenceappear to be :—one near Shrewsbury, two near Brighton, one nearSouthampton, one on the Scilly Islands, and one near Cambridge—all in autumn ; while a bird was killed near Brighton in April 1858by a person who saw it alight and begin dusting itself in the road.On July 27th 1888, Mr. Cooper, the taxidermist, of Radnor Street,E.G., showed me a live bird said to have been taken at Amberley,Sussex, on the iSth of that month. Although this species has been recorded from Heligoland, it canonly be considered a straggler to Northern or even Central Germany,to Belgium, and to France north of Paris ; but at Blois Sir EdwardNewton found it breeding, and it is a regular summer-visitant tothe districts further south, although said to emigrate in winter.
