Title
An Iron Age copper alloy toggle
Description
English: A Late Iron Age to Early Roman cast copper alloy button-and-loop fastener with solid double-disc head (1- 200 AD). The fastening has an irregular plan, but has been cast in one piece with a heavy circular-plan loop, above which projects a toggle formed by two conjoined discs. The circular-sectioned loop extends into a slight point before curving upwards and thickening slightly to form a short shaft beneath the toggle. At the top of this shaft, the fastening extends outwards into a platform with the two discs forming a figure 8. On the uppermost surface each disc has a recessed interior to accommodate a decorative insert that is now missing. This would probably have been either enamel or bone. The base of each recessed disc has been drilled with a small circular hole. The outer edges of the discs were originally decorated with a projecting pellet border, but these pellets have mostly been worn away so that only a few survive. The toggle has acquired a dark olive-green patina. The button-and-loop fastener belongs to Wild's (1970) Class I, a type encountered in Britain from the late Iron Age and into the Early Roman period. Dimensions: length: 19.45mm; width: 20.07mm; thickness: 3.61mm; weight: 5.79g. Reference: Wild, J. P. (1970) Button-and-Loop Fasteners in the Roman Provinces Britannia I pp. 137-155
