from the body of the embryo; (2) the vitelline veins, re-turning the blood from the circulation of the yolk-sac; (3) the allantoic, laterthe umbilical, veins, returning the blood from the chorion and the developingplacental structures. The early systemic veins consist of an upper trunk, theanterior cardinal or primitive jugular veins, by which the blood from the headis carried to the heart, and the posterior cardinals, collecting the blood fromthe trunk and the important Wolffian bodies. These vessels, along with thevitelline and allantoic veins, pour their blood into a common receptacle, thesinus venoms, which opens directly into the primary auricular division of theheart. For a short time these veins are about equal in size and are evenlydeveloped on the two sides ; soon, however, the results of unequal growth becomemanifested in the disproportionate advance of some and the retrogression ofothers.
