Ampulla (obverse) |

Description |
English: Complete Medieval lead pilgrim’s ampulla, probably dating from the 13th to the 15th century. The neck of the ampulla is closed and carries no decoration, with straight flaring sides and no discernible rim adornment. The base of the neck is defined by a double parallel moulding filled with oblique lines on both faces. The attachment loops curve upwards, and the upper arm of each loop joins at the position of the double moulding. The obverse face depicts a scallop shell consisting of fine grooves, resulting in a smooth edge, Spencer’s (1990) Type II. The reverse face has a circular panel defined by two concentric moulded lines and in-filled with a hatched motif. In the centre top of the panel is a crowned letter ‘W’. There are further oblique lines on the faceted edge of the reverse face. |
