Here and there an esaque crossedthe road, carrying the clear water of Pueblo Riverinto the fields of the Mexicans on the outskirts of thetown. Leaving the willowy bower, there loomed upbefore us the two great pyramidal buildings of thepueblo, which, according to the historian, are the mostinteresting and extraordinary inhabited structures inAmerica. We went in search of a young Indian named Lo-renzo, of whom we had previously heard. He wasat home, and proved a most efficient interpreter andguide, as well as an agreeable companion. He wasa well-educated fellow, having been graduated fromCarlisle a year or two before. Since his return tothe pueblo, however, he has been looked down uponby the rest of the inhabitants, who consider hisknowledge a great disadvantage to them.
