English: The word ‘Bonam’ originates from ‘Bhojanam’, a Sanskrit word that means feast in Telugu. First, women cook rice with jaggery in new earthen pots. Women then decorate the pots with turmeric, Vermillion and neem leaves. Then, the women lit a lamp on the top of the pot. Women then carry these pots on their heads and offer them to Goddess Yellemma. Along with that, women carry bangles and sari.
తెలుగు: వేటపోతు మెడలో వేప మండలు కట్టి వ్యాధి నిరోధక శక్తిని పెంచే పసుపు కలిపిన నీరు, వేపాకుల్ని చల్లుకుంటూ భక్తులు ఊరేగింపుగా గ్రామదేవతల ఆలయాలకు తరలివెళ్లి బోనాలు సమర్పిస్తారు. ఇలా బోనాల సమర్పణ వల్ల దేవతలు శాంతించి అంటు వ్యాధులు రాకుండా కాపాడుతారని భక్తుల విశ్వాసం. తెలంగాణ ప్రత్యేక రాష్ట్రంగా ఏర్పడిన తర్వాత ఈ బోనాలను రాష్ట్ర పండుగగా నిర్వహిస్తున్నారు.భోజనం అని అర్థం కలిగిన బోనం దేవికి సమర్పించే నైవేద్యం. మహిళలు వండిన అన్నంతో పాటు పాలు,పెరుగు, బెల్లం, కొన్నిసార్లు ఉల్లిపాయలతో కూడిన బోనాన్ని మట్టి , ఇత్తడి లేక రాగి కుండలలో తమ తలపై పెట్టుకుని డప్పుతో ఆటగాళ్ళు తోడ్కొని రాగా దేవి గుడికి వెళ్తారు. మహిళలు తీసుకెళ్ళే ఈ బోనాల కుండలను చిన్న వేప రెమ్మలతో పసుపు, కుంకుమ, బియ్యం పిండి ముగ్గుతో అలంకరించి దానిపై ఒక దీపం ఉంచడం జరుగుతుంది.
