Huile sur toile, 1892 "A l'artiste mourant, les Etres nés de son Génie viennent donner le baiser d'adieu" : c'est avec emphase que Maignan inscrit Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux parmi les grands génies de son temps, renouvelant dans un langage aux frontières du symbolisme l'iconographie du rêve. Les oeuvres les plus emblématiques du sculpteur surgissent de ses songes, alors qu'il est plongé dans un état transitoire entre le sommeil et la mort : la"Flore" du Louvre, "Les Cinq parties du monde" de la Fontaine de l'Observatoire, "La Danse" de l'Opéra ou encore "Ugolin", que le sculpteur avait réalisé à Rome lorsqu'il était pensionnaire à la Villa Médicis, prennent vie dans l'atelier. Précédée de nombreuses études préparatoires, cette grande toile est récompensée par une Médaille d'Honneur au Salon de 1892.
