, and thisweakness has been overcome by the momentum of the flywheel and by the device of keeping the engine constantly inmotion while the car is in service and transmitting its powerfrom the crank shaft, through a second-motion shaft, to therunning gear by friction clutches under the control of thedriver. This is arranged as follows : The driver, standing on the front platform, has before himthe brake wheel, and beside him a movable lever not unlikethe reversing bar of a locomotive. When this lever is in avertical position the engine shaft is disconnected from the sec-ond-motion shaft and the axles, so that the car may be at restwhile the engine is running free. When the lever is pushedto the right the second-motion shaft, with which the axles areconnected by chain gearing, is brought into engagement by apinion and friction clutch, which gives the car a speed of 4miles per hour.
