The material ordered consisted of twobogie trucks of three axles each, with two cradles or racksfor carrying the torpedo boat to be placed upon them. Aspecial car was made to carry the sternpost of the boat withtwo flexible hauling chains. The Creusot engineers, underthe direction of the Navy Department, made a careful exami-nation as to the best method of constructing these trucks. Itwas originally intended that they should be built of wood andiron. The wooden cradles were to turn in arcs of a circlemade of iron resting upon the bolster of a truck, just as longtimbers are now carried on cars. The trucks and cradles asfinally built were made entirely of metal, as shown in figs. 1to 4 ; the angle which the cradle could describe was verysmall
