Theyexplained that the three barrels had been added by theSuperintendent at the factory, without the knowledge ofthe firm shipping the maierial, to fill out the order, as helacked that number of barrels ol the belter grade when fiewanted to make the shipment. Our reply was that wewere in every sense gratified ai the turn things had taken ;that by their own confession an attempt at fiaud had bet nmade, and that they were caught, and the punishment ofhaving to pay the return freight for the annoyance causedus was no inorr than was justly due them. We are quite confident that the method of taking asingle sample insures us greater uniformity of shipmentsthan if we took average samples, and after now a numberof years experience we have vet to find any manufacturerwho seriously objects to the method of sampling which wepursue.
