As the place became settled Ursulinesisters arrived and established schools. And at last, aC(uarter of a century after the landing of the first ship-ment of girls, the curious history of female importationsended with the arrival of that famous band of sixtydemoiselles of respectable family and authenticatedspotless reputation, who came to be taken as wives byonly the more prosperous young colonists of the betterclass. HISTORY, THE CREOLE, AND HIS DUELS to us by the name of correction girls, but these laterarrivals—each furnished by the Company of the Westwith a casket containing a trousseau—are known to thisday as les filles a la cassette, or casket girls. A curious feature of this bit of history, as it appliesto present-day New Orleans, is that though one hearsof many families that claim descent from some nice,well-behaved casket girl, one never by any chancehears of a family claiming to be descended from a ladyof the other stock. When it is considered that the cor-rection girls far outnumbered their virtuous sisters ofthe casket, and ought, therefore, by the law of aver-ages, to have left a greater progeny, the matter becomesstranger still, taking on a scientific interest.
