Description

The American Painted Lady (APL) is one of the most beautiful butterflies. I love the way she dips her head into the petals seeming to inhale the deep fragrance. Her colors are fabulous with a pink heart peeking up an the lateral view. The dorsum greatly resembles the Painted Lady (PL) but her wing tips are "falcate" like a sickle. There are also tiny white spots visible on the dorsum of the APL that are not seen on the PL. The chief difference in the lateral view is in the number of round spots on the hind wing. The APL has two large ones while the PL has only two.
