Die Wasser- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung des Bundes und ihre Vorgängerbehörden haben Wandel und Entwicklung der Bundeswasserstraßen über die Jahrzehnte in einer Vielzahl von Fotografien festgehalten und damit einen bedeutsamen Bilderschatz geschaffen. Die großen Wasserwege prägen das Bild der deutschen Kulturlandschaft nachhaltig.

Der Bildbestand des historischen Bildarchivs wird kontinuierlich erweitert. Der wertvolle Bildbestand der Wasser- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung (WSV) wird durch eine wissenschaftliche Fachredaktion digitalisiert und mit Metadaten hinterlegt. Die Motive dokumentieren die Entwicklung der Bauarbeiten an den Bundeswasserstraßen.
