DescriptionAlpine Unit Photographed by Sgt. Lior Ziv.jpg |
Every year during the winter season, the combat soldiers of the Alpine Unit are dispatched to Mt. Hermon, after having been trained to operate under extreme weather conditions. Sgt. Lior Ziv photographed some of the soldiers of the Alpine Unit training during an exercise in Mt. Hermon. Sgt. Lior Ziv was a photographer in the IDF Spokesperson's Unit. During his army service, he took thousands of photos ranging from portraits of senior commanders, combat training exercises, and soldier musicians. On April 14th, 2003, Lior set out to photograph the Givati infantry brigade uncover a smuggling tunnel in the Gaza Strip. This was at the height of the Second Intifada. He and two other soldiers were to follow the Givati soldiers as they entered a terror suspect's house. Lior snapped dozens of photos at the beginning of the mission, capturing the moment soldiers got out of their armored vehicle, and slowly walked into the house. Minutes after they entered the first house, Lior and the soldiers with him were attacked. Lior was shot and killed on the spot. |
