DescriptionAllied dead at Fromelles, 1916.jpg |
English: A German photograph depicting what is believed to be a large group of Australian or British bodies in a wooded area behind the German lines near the village of Fromelles in the aftermath of the Battle of Fromelles. The photograph forms part of a series taken by a German photographer that were printed and circulated as postcards aimed at boosting morale in Germany. The caption at the bottom reads "Gef. Englander n.d Angriff b. Fromelles 19.7.1916", which translates as "Fallen British from the attack at Fromelles on 19.7.1916". Note some of the bodies have been covered with ground sheets. Mass graves containing some 250 Allied soldiers from World War I were discovered on the edge of "Pheasant Wood" on the outskirts of Fromelles in 2008. The bodies are being reburied in Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery. |
