In many placesthe formation is a mass of shells and casts and the abundant cementingmaterial is often so prominently calcareous that a perfectly freshspecimen has much the appearance of a true limestone. THE DEVONIAN SHALE PERIOD. The liomney, Jennings and Hampshire formatious are largelycomposed of fine sediments, and may here be treated together. Ac-cording to Mr. Willis, the lowlands of the early Devonian were gen-eral from Xew York to Georgia, continuing low in the southernAppalachian area throughout the Devonian, but northward becomingconsiderably elevated, produced mountains probably several thousandfeet high, the degradation of which supplied the later Devoniansediments.
