Description
English: Emperor Augustus statue. This is a plaster copy of a statue found in the Villa of Augustus’ wife Livia, just outside Rome. He is shown addressing his troops. Eros rides on a dolphin next to his left leg, and symbolic images are shown on his cuirass. He wears a cuirass and the purple cloak of an Emperor. Marble statues were colourfully painted. These colours have been restored here, based on traces of the paints found on the original. No traces were found on the skin an cuirass. Plaster copy after original in the Vatican Museums (inv. 16.003)
Nederlands: Dit beeld van Keizer Augustus is een gipskopie van een van de bekendste standbeelden van hem. Het werd gevonden in een villa van zijn vrouw Livia, even buiten Rome. Hij draagt een kuras en een purperen keizersmantel. Naast zijn been rijdt Eros op een dolfijn en op zijn kuras staan symbolische afbeeldingen. Marmeren standbeelden waren beschilderd. Aan de hand van originele verfsporen zijn de oorspronkelijke kleuren op dit beeld gereconstrueerd. Op zijn huis en kuras stonden geen verfsporen. Gipskopie van origineel in Vaticaanse Musea (inv. 16.003)
