Description |
English: Alki Beach is also known as the birthplace of Seattle, as the Denny party landed there in 1851. This settlement they called "New York," adding the Chinook work "Alki" (pronounced Al-key) which meant "by and by." The "New York" was dropped by 1853, but the name Alki remains. Alki Beach was a favorite campsite for the Indians and, upon installation of the ferry service in 1888, it became a popular Sunday outing destination for Seattleites. Handwritten on sleeve: Alki Point (Beach).
