Description

Extraordinário fenómeno vulcânico, um dos mais espectaculares dos Açores, o Algar do Carvão fica situado no interior da Caldeira Guilherme Moniz e está acessível aos visitantes. Desenvolve-se sob a forma de cone vulcânico, com cerca de 90 metros de altura, desde a abertura ao exterior até ao fundo, onde existe uma lagoa. No seu interior, ao qual se acede através de um túnel artificial e de uma escadaria, conseguimos perceber o trajecto seguido pelo rio de lava expelido pelo vulcão mas travado por uma espessa cama de pedra.
