Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In 1900, Alfred Rose of Cleveland, Ohio was a sailor, when he lost his left foot "a few inches above the ankle" in an accident with a hawser. Within a few months, he had built himself a prosthetic leg, featuring a "large hook at the lower end", an "iron pin below the knee", and "two small pins, one on either side of the leg halfway down"; with it, he was able to climb masts like the other sailors.

In June 1904, he stopped in Port Townsend, Washington, where this photograph was taken; he subsequently joined the crew of the British ship Lismore, bound for Australia.
