Albion Docks - BS3

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Albion Docks boatyard as seen from Cliftonwood Crescent, Bristol 8. These docks were originally laid out for the firm of Hilhouse & Sons and they were called "The New Dockyard". In 1848 a company owned by Charles Hill bought them and he renamed them Albion Docks. Charles Hill & Sons sold them in 1977, despite having a full order book, because of the closure of Bristol Docks. A company called David Abels them took them over in 1980 and boat building and boat repairs have continued since then, albeit on a smaller scale. The site includes this large covered dry dock built by Hilhouse in 1820 that has a capacity of 350 tonnes. The vessel nearest the camera in the dock is the ferry originally built in 2002 for the Portsmouth to Gosport ferry but cancelled before completion. Long a fixture in the dockyard, it was finally completed as the medical missionary ship Forth Hope in 2016.
