In 1899, gold was discovered along the sandy beaches along the Snake River and other rivers that fed into the Bering Sea. In spring of 1900, tens of thousands of people arrived from Seattle, Portland and San Francisco, transforming Nome into a tent city. The height of the gold rush was from 1900-1909, but mining continued for decades.
