Ik herinner me die wedstrijd nu na een halve eeuw nog steeds! M'n aanstaande zwager Steinhart had twee kaartjes voor de tribune-stadszijde. Aan die kant viel de openingstreffer van Ajax na een dik kwartier. Mijn nieuwsgierigheid ging uit naar Faas Wilkes, die na zijn profcarrière bij Valencia en Fiorentina nu in het limburgse Fortuna'54 speelde, samen met mede-internationals Cor van der Hart en Jan Notermans. Maar Fortuna viel tegen en een gemiste strafschop bevestigde de misère van hun aanvalsspel. Tot 20 minuten voor het eindsignaal, toen Ajax met 3-0 op rozen leek te zitten. Toen deed een tegentreffer van Fortuna de wedstrijd kantelen. Ajax was het initiatief kwijt, Fortuna verhoogde het tempo en vond de voorste linies nu in vloeiende combinaties, aaneengeregen tot een stormachtig veldoverwicht, waaruit met steeds kortere tussenpozen maar liefst drie tegendoelpunten in het Ajax-doel aan onze stadszijde ploften. Wij op de tribune moesten bukken voor de rondgesmeten leren kussentes.
