尾張藩士 ・ 平藩九朗 （1772-1840） が余暇に楽しんだやきものである。 当時から評判が高く、 数寄者に珍重された。 九朗は陥陶業取締役を務めた際に赤津で作陶の手ほどきを受け、 文化11年 （1814） の隠居後、 小金ヶ谷の養老園 （名古屋市北区） にて本格的に作陶したとされる。
