Hunt in 1858 : "The town of Ahwaz is nothing beyond the usual collection of miserable hovels, constructed of mud and stone, grouped together without attempt at regularity at street or thoroughfare, and, as is peculiar to the east where it is most impratively necessary utterly without drainage or provision for cleanliness or ventilation, It may contain from fifteen hundred to two thousand inhabitants, all Arabs and a good looking race scarcely darker than Spaniards, there is som trifling cultivation and a few scattered date trees around it and a very pretty wooded Island directly opposite in mid-stream"
