The Rainfall Simulator is a “see it to believe it” demonstration of what happens to the land when it rains. Each tray shows how soils in different conditions react when rain falls on the soil surface. The simulator simultaneously distributes rainfall onto different surfaces. The rainfall simulator puts rainfall, an inch-and-a-half of water in 10 minutes, to show how infiltration rates are affected by tillage, residue and living plants versus bare/tilled soil. The runoff from these different scenarios is collected in glass jars so one can see the results. For example, the rainfall simulator can highlight how keeping various amounts of residue on the land surface can reduce sediment loss, or how grass buffers can be an effective conservation practice. There are three rainfall simulators located in South Dakota. Contact the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) for information about the rainfall simulator presentations at (605) 352-1200. Jeff Hemenway, Soil Quality Specialist, Huron, and Eric Barsness, Conservation Agronomist, Brookings, encourage incorporating the simulator into tours, workshops or other field days.
