Agaricus crocodilinus Murrill Image location: Maple Shade, New Jersey, USA A group of 6 specimens growing at the base of a European linden tree. Looks like an unusual species with light yellow caps that are ochraceous in the center. The cut context eventually stained reddish-brown, but the intensity was weak and discoloration was mostly restricted to the stipe and the juncture with the cap. The odor was strong, sweet and somewhat pleasant — cannot really describe it, but possibly anise/licorice?? KOH stained cap surface yellow; the reaction was still yellow but much paler on stipe surface and context. The largest/oldest specimen had a 10.5 cm wide cap and a 6.6 cm long stipe; the stipe was uniformly clavate, 1.5 cm wide at the apex and 2.5 cm wide at the base/bulb. The gills were 5-6 mm wide. The partial veil didn’t leave a distinct annulus on the stipe, just some torn fragments and a “zone”; the cap margins were heavily appendiculate. The bulbs were decorated with a few concentric zones of appressed floccose-fibrillose material that stained brown.
Microscopic features: [20/1/1]; only 10 spores were measured in side-view (dorsiventral, with apiculus to the side) owning to this being a rare orientation; the other 10 spore were in the very common face (dorsal or ventral) view. L x W = 8.6-11.4 (-11.9) x 5.1-6.3 (-7.0) μm; L’ x W’ = 9.7 × 5.7 μm; Q = 1.65-1.81; Q’ = 1.72; Smooth, golden-brown in Melzer’s; inequilateral and egg-shaped/ellipsoid in face-view; elongate based on the Q values. Based on chemical features: nrITS sequence is an almost perfect match to multiple GB sequences
