Description |
English: Agamemnon off Greenwich This watercolour shows the 'Agamemnon' of 1852 lying off Greenwich, probably in about June1857, when the ship appears to have made a visit to the Thames, probably as part of events marking the end of the Crimean War. At that time the Governor of Greenwich Hospital was asked to give members of the crew free admission to the Naval Gallery in the Painted Hall and, although he approved, the Hospital Board refused citing a previous Admiralty order of 1846 on the subject (TNA ADM67/108,11 June 1857). Why this watercolour should have been made nearly 30 years later is unknown. It is signed and dated on the lower left corner, W.T.Q/83. The steamer on the left appears to be in London County Council colours. The 'Agamemnon' itself was broken up in 1870. |
