35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Falconiformes; Family: Accipitridae; Genus: Haliaetus; Genus species: Haliaetus vocifer. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 74-84 cm; Identification: The African fish eagle has a white head, chest, tail, and back. Its feathers and scapulars are black. The abdomen and wing coverts are chestnut; Habitat: Lakes, rivers, coastal lagoons, mangrove swamps; Diet: Carnivore: fish, water birds, small mammals; Reproduction: Breeding takes place during the cooler months of the year. Nests are constructed in tall trees; Social Structure: African fish eagles are most commonly seen in pairs; Behavior: As they hunt fish, these birds will sometimes submerge themselves to catch their prey. They will also rob other birds; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The vocalization of the African fish eagle is so well-known and clear, it is sometimes referred to as the 'voice of Africa'.
