Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Membership card of the Potsdam Art Society, Pen and ink on stone by Adolph Menzel from 1836 with allegorical depiction of the benefits of artistic work in the service of charity, described by Menzel himself as Stock certificate. To the right of the centre Menzel's monogram and the date 1836. To the left stone engraving by M. Weigel in Berlin. In a letter of 17 October 1836 Menzel writes to his friend Puhlmann about the drawing: "I hope that the respectable gentlemen will be able to understand that the groups on the right hand of the picture refer to the advancement of art, and those on the left hand to charity; it does not need to be remembered, I think everything is self-explanatory; I intend to execute the arabesque as a evergreen." In a letter of 5 November 1836 Menzel wrote: "Here are a few impressions of the Stock certificate, I have left the space for the name of the Shareholders below the hands on which the wheel of Fortuna turns...".
Links Steindr. v.M. Weigel in Berlin.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.
