verprospects of great extentand the most varied interest. The crowning view of thewhole series is that fromClaremont looking up theriver. This is at the north-em end of the park, wherethe grounds are widest andwhere they reach their great-est elevation. .\s the highground here abruptly fallsaway, the road naturallyends, sweeping around in aloop on the brow of thebluff where the interest inthe scenery culminates inthis commanding prospect. Here, half hidden in a grove, stood the historic mansiononce occupied by LordChurchill, but the oaks andtulip-trees which surroundedit are dead or dying one byone, as destructive im-provements have gashedthe hill-side with deep cutsand drained away the waterwhich fed their roots. Buta few months ago a giantpine which had survived thecruelties of the city engineerand at least one lightningstroke was chopped downwhen the old house which itsheltered was restorefl forvictualing purposes beyondall hope of recognition.Other trees were swept away RUERSIDE FAEK.

AtKOSb THE HUDSON IROM CLAKEMONI, lOKT LKE IN THE DISTANCE. RIVERSIDE PARK. 917 at the same period, when there was much dig-ging out and heaping up of earth hereaboutin accordance with some unrevealed plan. But in spite of the desolation of the fore-ground, the distant prospect remains. Belowthe bluff the Hudson still broadens out tohold the light of all the sky. The Palisadesfrown along the left, and seem to end in abold promontory, around which the river flowsfrom the mysterious distances beyond, whileon the island side a rocky arm is thrust outfrom Washington Heights, to protect the deepand quiet bay. Of course it is to be understood that theRiverside Park of to-day is little better thana promise, or rather, it is but the foundationand frame of what it is to be. The road-bedis laid, and this establishes the plan beyondany possible abandonment. Of the hundredmiles of frontage upon navigable water, pos-sessed by the cities which cluster about thisharbor, three miles are thus rescued f
