Phelps, Taylor, Lieutenant-Commander William Gwin, and Lexington,Lieutenant J. W. Shirk, engaged the enemyat long range in the rear of the iron-clads.After the battle they pursued the enemystransports up the river, and the Conestogacaptured the steamer Eastport. The news ofthe capture of Fort Henry was received withgreat rejoicing all over the North.
