sen-tations of the martyred President. He is represented inthe attitude of making a public address, grasping theemancipation proclamation in one hand. He stoops alittle, he is angular, his cheeks are thin, his foreheaddeeply wrinkled. Old Illinoisans who had known Lin-coln from his boyhood pronounced it an excellent like-ness. The front of the pedestal on which the statuerests, bears the coat of arms of the United States inbronze. The American eagle on the shield is represent-ed as having broken the chain of slavery7, some of thelinks being grasped in his talons, and the rest held aloftin his beak. An olive branch, spurned, is thrust aside athis feet. Memorial hall, in the base of the monument, is filledwith various Lincoln relics and souvenirs. One of themost interesting of these is a stone from the wall of Ser-ius Tullius, presented to President Lincoln by citizens•>f Rome in 1865. It is a large, irregular slab of sand-tone, on which is carved the following inscription inLatin:

The Lincoln Monument at Springfield, 111. 162 ABRAHAM LINCOLN. To Abraham Lincoln, President for the second timeof the American republic, citizens of Rome present thisstone from the walls of Servius Tullius, by which thememory of each of those brave asserters of liberty maybe associated. Anno, 1865. After Lincolns death this stone was found in the base-ment of the capital at Washington. It is supposed thatthe President, not caring to have a furore raised over theincident, had ordered the stone stored away without say-ing anything about receiving it. The body of Lincolnwas removed to the crypt in the monument from a tem-porary tomb in the public vault Oct. 9, 1874. The mar-ble sarcophagus bears the inscription: With malicetoward none, with charity for all.—Lincoln. Thebodies of Mrs. Lincoln and the three sons, William, Ed-ward, and Thomas (Thad), have also been placed in themonument. Two crypts are left for the two remainingmembers of the family.
