The fact is I dontthink they are a credit to the makers. But I do knowthat I made rails then, and think I could make betterones than those now. That convention closed with a resolution declaring:Abraham Lincoln is the first choice of the Republicanparty of Illinois for the presidency, and instructing the 58 ABRAHAM LINCOLN. delegates to the Chicago convention to use all honorablemeans to secure his nomination and to cast the vote ofthe state as a unit for him. Thus was the movement started that should makeAbraham Lincoln, the flat-boatman, the rail splitter, thestandard-bearer of the Republican party in the fatefulelection of i860.
