The Whig party in part grew from criticism of theorganizational methods of the Democratic party, and Whigs,therefore, tended to be reluctant to adopt the organizationalmethods of the Democrats. Among Illinois Whigs, Lincolnand his close political allies like Anson G. Henry were leadersin urging better organization. Lincoln knew that this was theonly hope of success for the party in his overwhelminglyDemocratic state. In 1840 Lincoln wrote a confidentialcircular for the Whig State Committee suggesting that theway to overthrow the trained bands that are opposed to us,whose salaried officers are ever on the watch, and whosemisguided followers are ever ready to obey their smallestcommands was to organize the whole State.
