twork for many different publications and projects, and muchof it has focused on Abraham Lincoln. Fascinated by theoddly balanced ruggedness and beauty of Lincolns face, hebegan drawing pictures of Lincoln when he was twelve yearsold. His attention naturally turned to the photographs ofLincoln which he copied and adapted. Mr. Ostendorf gotspecial encouragement in his work from Louis A. Warren, oneof the few Lincoln authorities at the time interested inencouraging work with Lincoln pictures. As he soughtphotographs from which to work, Mr. Ostendorf also cameinto contact with Frederick Hill Meserve, the first greatstudent and collector of Lincoln photographs. Meserve wasas nice as an old man could be to a young man who sharedhis interest, Mr. Ostendorf remembers. Mr. Ostendorfs first book A Picture Story of AbrahamLincoln (1962), a biography for young readers, was so popularthat it has been reissued by Lamplight Publishing, Inc., asAbraham Lincoln: The Boy and the Man.
