Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built circa 1845, this Greek Revival-style building was constructed for Robert Preston as a branch of the Exchange Bank of Virginia, which operated until, after being devastated by the Civil War, it closed in the latter half of the 1860s. After the bank closed, the building became the house of James Wilson Preston. The building initially housed the bank on the first floor with the banker and his family living on the upper floors of the building, but became an entirely residential building after the bank ceased operations. The house features a red brick exterior with decorative patterned brickwork, a side-gable roof, a cornice with brackets and modillions, six-over-six double-hung windows with decorative stone lintels and stone sills, a central main entrance door with sidelights and a transom, and a secondary front entrance door with a transom, flanked by two double-hung windows. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, and is a contributing structure in the Abingdon Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
