[edit]DescriptionAberdeen Hydrogen Project (7789295380).jpg |
First Minister Alex Salmond announced funding of up to £3.3m from the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise for a pioneering EU-backed clean energy hub in Aberdeen, including Europe’s largest hydrogen bus fleet. The City Council, supported by Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group, is initiating the project with an order for 10 hydrogen fuel-cell buses – that produce water vapour instead of harmful emissions. They will run on First and Stagecoach bus routes by early 2014. Scottish & Southern Energy Power Distribution (SSEPD), working with industrial gases and clean energy technologies business BOC, will develop an integrated ‘whole hydrogen’ system which can harness wind energy to produce and store hydrogen that is then used as fuel for the bus fleet, as well as for generating electricity at times of peak demand. Pictured from left are: Andrew Jarvis, Managing Director, Stagecoach Bluebird; Giles Fearnley, Managing Director, First UK Bus; First Minister Alex Salmond MSP; Stuart Hogarth, Scottish & Southern Energy Power Distribution; Nick Rolf, innovation manager for hydrogen systems, BOC; Aberdeen City Council Leader Cllr Barney Crockett; and Adrian Gillespie, Director of Energy & Low-carbon Technologies, Scottish Enterprise.
