Summary
[edit]DescriptionAbandoned railway, abandoned cycleway - geograph.org.uk - 988765.jpg |
English: Abandoned railway, abandoned cycleway The brickwork beyond the tree is part of the platform of the former Whiteinch Riverside station, opened by the Caledonian Railway in 1896 and closed by British Railways in 1964. The tarmac where the rails once were was part of the Glasgow to Loch Lomond cycleway, into which the railway was converted several years later. Where both the tarmac and the platform end there is a 20-foot drop to ground-level. The viaduct and embankment that gave passing cyclists and pedestrians an elevated view of the riverside were recently demolished because, it was claimed, they blocked the view from further inland. It seems ironic, therefore, that a huge monolithic car showroom building (the grey box beyond the trees on the left) and several multi-storey blocks of flats below the tower crane are deemed to be less of an obstruction to riverward views. |
