ps off at itsangle. The fi-agment may be removed by the aid of an-other lithotrite ; but if this appear impracticable, the patientmust be submitted to the operation of lithotomy. Cystitis,nephritis, peritonitis, or retention of urine, may follow onlithotrity, and so also orchitis and prostatitis. Slight orsevere febrile symptoms are by no means uncommon. In-flammation of the plexus of veins about the neck of thebladder is a very grave sequel and may be fatal. To insure agood result in a case of lithotrity, the patient must be firstcarefully prepared as regards regime and diet; the sittingsshould be of short duration ; and, lastly, the greatest care andsupervision of the patient must be exercised during and afterthe time that he is under operative treatment. Relapse.—Should a small fragment of stone-be left in thebladder, it will probably form the nucleus of another calculus,so that the surgeon must make sure that all is removed beforethe patient leaves his care.
